Oh my. Sarah is now around 11 lbs. Smiles, Coos and is all around way more interactive. She is going to be 6 months old on September 7th. Yay!! She is now in 0-3 month clothing and is just all together adorable!! Her mop of hair is beginning to dissappear....and she looks kinda like she has a mullet. She gets Developmental care twice a month...her homecare is almost over and they are taking her off oxygen today....im a little freaked but totally excited for her to actually breathe from her nose. lol...I would like to plan a type of "sip and see" type party for sarah because we never got a baby shower....its like her "im here" party. I will see how it goes and figure out what is gonna happen and let ya'll know :)

Wow...time flies! Sarah is now up to about 9lbs 12 oz. Almost ten pounds!! Sarah is starting to smile and is getting really good at her facial expressions! She loves her swing a lot and spends quite a bit of sleepy time in there. She sometimes doesn't like to fall asleep so we either have to take her for a walk or a car ride....if its cool enough we walk :) she is such a beautiful baby and is doing so well. Sarah is still on oxygen with no known date as to when she will get off. She has homecare nurses coming twice a week, as well as doctors appointments and visits from Families first and Development visits....its a chaotic lifestyle. But we love it :)

Sarah has been doing beautifully. She is getting used to being in a new environment and we are getting used to having her home. She is still on oxygen and will continue to be for quite a while. She is 8lbs 12.6oz now and continues to grow :). Sarah has shots on Thursday....And she will be 4 months old on Tuesday. Wow, Where did the time go? I am loving finally being put into a motherly role and Eric is loving cuddle time :) I catch more pictures of Eric and Sarah sleeping than I do of anything else. We had a great 4th and I really enjoyed seeing everyone!! I have a ton of pictures for everyone :)

We're HOME !!!! We got home this past Thursday and this is the first time I have really had a chance to get online and update you all. On Friday Sarah went to the doctor and she weighed 8lbs 9oz. He said she looked great and we have another appointment next week. She is a great baby that barely fusses and is just so cute!! We are so lucky to have her. And daddy is happy she is here for him to cuddle every day :)

Well folks....Tuesday isn't our magic day. Thursday is......tentatively. I can't put money on it until we get home. Sarah is still just amazing and doing so well. :) I hope to be able to show her off when we get home. Today her primary nurse, Jessica, held her and I got some super cute pictures of them together and some cute ones of Sarah. :)

Today was Sarah's Due date. She is 102 days old...14 1/2 weeks. Wow. Today we had a care conference....we SHOULD be going home TUESDAY!!! yay!! I hope i have everything she needs!

Sarah is now able to eat whatever she wants....whenever she wants. :) The doctors told us to get ready to go...if she continues to do well we can probably leave at the beginning of the week after next :) I am so excited!! I can't wait to be home!!

Sarah is up to 7lbs 3oz. She is 18 1/2 inches long. Sarah is almost ready to go home. Her eating is the only thing holding her back. She only eats 6 out of 8 of her feeds from a bottle. Once she proves she can do that she can eat whatever whenever she wants as long as she takes a certain amount in after a 24 hour period. She is doing really good on her oxygen needs and the doctors are currently weaning her diuretics so that she doesn't go home on them. Grandma Debbie and Grandpa's Rory and Danny have come to see Sarah this past week. They were so excited to see her and hold her and see how much she has grown. :) Hopefully soon I can take her home and everyone can see her!

Sarah is 90 days old. Wow...that was fast. She weighs 6lbs 15oz. By tomorrow she will be 7lbs. Today she was staying awake for several hours at a time and making mommie's arms tired from holding her. I love to cuddle with her :) Not many changes from yesterday....she still rocks my socks and the socks of the Docs with how well she is doing.

Sarah weighs 6lbs 13oz. She is on .2liters of oxygen at 100%....which is amazing. She lacks stamina to nipple all 8 feeds a day now so the Nurse Practitioner will gauge daily how well she does and if she can handle more feeds....right now they are only allowing 4 nipple feeds a day. It could be considered a minor setback....but Sarah doesn't have the same level of respiratory support she used to. In fact, she barely has any respiratory support at all (which is AMAZING). She went from a high requirement to barely any just because her machine broke....Its great!! Right now my days are spent with tons of cuddle time and mondo amounts of reading. It's getting to be near the end for us...the light at the end of the tunnel is evident....now we wait for sarah to get that final push to get her home and we will be all set. :)

Busy Busy Busy!! With Eric visiting this weekend, and forgetting to put updates up I have gotten behind!! Sarah's Vapotherm broke.....which was a good thing. They put her on a Nasal Canula and she is doing so good with just the oxygen flow :) She is actually on settings that are less than what is required to go home....but we aren't ready to go home yet. She needs to get better with eating and not have any brady or apnea episodes. She is almost there.....just not quite yet. Sarah had issues today with staying in bed....i kept finding her off to the side or crooked...so cute. She weighs 6lbs 11oz!

Sarah is 12 weeks old!! Only 2 weeks until her due date! Sarah is almost drinking the full 8 bottles a day. She pulled out her gavage tube and they nurses haven't had to put it back in yet :). Sarah weighs 6 lbs 5 ounces and is getting bigger and bigger! She has boobs! lol. Eric got to come see us this weekend and he has been cuddling with Sarah a lot. When I am there she gets held about 6 hours a day at least. She gets to be spoiled now though, cause she has been through hell these past 12 weeks. She is doing really well still and is growing like a weed!

Sarah couldn't be more perfect or cuter. She weighs 6lbs finally! She cant seem to get to drinking 8 bottles a day....she gets tired too easily. Her respiratory support on her vapotherm is lower so she has to work harder....but she is still doing so well. I hope she gets to drinking 8 bottles a day ASAP....but she has to do it on her own time and right now that is what we are waiting for.

Sarah is 5 lbs 14 oz. She is 18 inches long!! Sarah got a bath today and she really seemed to like it! She is continuing to do well and she is eating up to 6 bottles a day(her bottle is bigger than her head). Her preemie clothes are getting too small and im hurriedly trying to cycle out all of her clothes so she can wear them at least once. :)

Sarah weighs 5lbs 13oz and she is taking 6 bottles a day now!! She has issues with bringing herself back from desaturating really low....but altogether its not something that counts against her. She has successfully grown out of most of her preemie clothes but her feet are still too small to be in some socks. She is doing exceptionally well!! Today she was "mommy's little jelly bean" :)

Sarah has been taking up to 4 bottles a day. I gave her a bath tonight and she is way slippery....but now she smells good and like flowery farts rather than just farts. She got her settings dropped a little on her vapotherm and she weighs 5lbs 7.5oz. She is still, as you can see, doing amazing!! From what I hear Sarah's bedroom at home is painted now and soon we can move in her stuff!!

Sarah took 2 whole bottles today!! She paces herself really well and she doesn't rush. She actually has to work around a rather large feeding tube and its hard to get a good seal. She gets kinda tuckered out afterwards so she gets to sleep on me for about an hour after her bottle. I kept the bottle she used tonight so I have a momento of this occasion! She is having some reflux issues that are causing her to arch and get agitated....she hasn't spit up yet. She is beginning to grow out of all her preemie stuff....half of which she hasnt even worn....so right now I am racing to get her into new clothes every day so she can wear them all. And she looks adorable in everything we put her in!

SARAH HAD HER FIRST BOTTLE!! She drank 31 out of 38 cc's and we gavaged the rest. She did so good!! She got her eyes checked today too! Her eyes are fully formed and out of danger of retinal damage. I am so proud of her! :)

Sarah has been such a trooper today. Lots of changes for her. Most of my little missions today were achieved. They dropped Sarah's vapotherm settings. YAY!! AND they let us try to bottle feed. She only took 1cc and it went down the wrong pipe....but she gets a mulligan tomorrow and hopefully she will do better!! I am so excited that we are starting to nipple!! yay!! She stayed the same weight....apparently she had a big poop that evened her out...hopefully she gains tomorrow. The picture gives you an idea of how little she still is....she looks huge to me but she is still so tiny!

Sarah continues to do well on the vapotherm. They lowered her settings and she seems to be tolerating them well. She is about 4 lbs 13 oz and she is eating just over an ounce a feeding.

Happy Mother's Day!! Sarah weighs 4lbs 8oz and is 15 1/2 inches long. She is getting better on her CPAP settings and may be going on a different breathing setup tomorrow. I am sorry I didn't get to the pictures yesterday....or tonight!! But I promise to post them ASAP. :) In the mean time enjoy little Sarah's old pictures and get ready for the new ones!

Sarah was extubated!! She is now on Hudson Prongs that deliver pressurized air to her. She looks so amazing!! I took pictures of the hospital today so everyone could see where Sarah is staying too! We are on the 4th floor in the NBICU/ICN. Its a beautiful hospital. Great Staff too!

Hello! Sarah is still doing amazing. We had and EKG today because her heart rate tends to race a little...we don't know why so we are looking into why it might be doing that. She is off Antibiotics and her settings on her ventilator are getting lower and lower. I am hoping soon she will be extubated. She still is in love with her pacifier....its so funny to see her fight with it to get it into a good spot with the tube. She is so cute! Not to be a conceited momma or anything but all of the nurses say she is so cute, the doctors do too!! Its great!

Hello everyone! I have been so busy lately that I haven't had much of a chance for updates. Sarah is in her crib now and she is doing really well with it. I love it cause I can get on a face to face level with her and talk to her. She loves her pacifier and is doing great with her sucking reflex. It is also helping her calm down a little. Her IV went out the other day so now she gets shots 3 times a day for antibiotics....its better than hunting for an IV on her already blown veins though. I just requested they give her tylenol before hand so she isn't in too much pain. She is getting so fussy lately that I think she needs to be extubated and put on another type of ventilation, they tape her at least once a day now. She hates the tube and tries to pull it out. She is continuing to blow me out of the water with how good she is doing!!

Sarah is off the Jet!! They are still getting good gasses from her so they may need to wean her vent even more than it is now. She is happily sitting at 90% oxygen saturation.....and that is beautiful. Its so much quieter and less monotonous sounding. And the sooner she gets weaned from the Vent, the sooner she will be extubated. :):) Trach still showing no growth....lets hope it stays that way

Sarah had a new doc today....she was more aggressive and got some stuff into action. She got an IV in her noggin so she looks like a little unicorn. They gave her another blood transfusion to get her hematocrit where it needs to be. She kept getting bad blood gasses, but tonight was an amazing one and hopefully they stay that way!! Her Lumbar Puncture results came back clear. Her blood tests have come back good....now we are just waiting for her Trach culture.

Sarah is now on 2 different diuretics that are less stressful to her system and she takes them every day. She lost a little weight but she will gain it back soon. She did really well today and she looks really cute in her outfit. Now I have to locate a ton of the little sleepers with snaps...they keep her feet warm and they allow her leads to have better access too.

Sarah weighs 4lbs and She is 15 1/4 inches long!!! YAY!! She got a bath today and is dressed in her Sunday best!!! She is much better from yesterday and still no reasoning behind why she had her episode. She now fits in Preemie clothes....so in another week or two she won't fit into them anymore. She can also rock quite the mohawk. If she keeps her weight and temp up, we will be put into a crib! I am glad that today we finally have a happy clean baby I believe we are on the road to a happy healthy baby!!

Sarah had a not so good day today. She had a seizure lasting 4 minutes. It was witnessed by the nurse and a respiratory therapist. Neurology was walking by and orderd an EEG. She got an EEG that showed no seizure activity....good thing. They ordered a full work up on Sarah including blood work that showed she had a low hematocrit level, it was 23 and needs to be 25 if the baby is intubated so they are giving her a blood transfusion for that. This is her 3rd blood transfusion to date and babies do really feel better after getting them. You can see it :). The blood work showed all other levels were good. They also did a lumbar puncture, fluid was clear but sent it off to be checked as well. As it stands....we don't know why she had it, or if it was a real seizure so they are keeping an eye on her....she is not doped up (thank goodness) except for her morphine to cut the edge on the High frequency ventilator (it does shake her 420 times a minute). Tonight she is just really tired and done with being messed with. I dont blame her. She is good now...but today was really busy and tiring.

Hello! Sarah weighs 3lbs 11.5oz today. They are continuing Lasix and decreased her feeds back to 26cc's. She has too much fluid on her lungs and in her other tissues and they are trying to get her back to a 'dry' weight. She's Puffy. I got to hold her again today...RT thinks its better so that she can mobilize some of her wetness out of her lungs. Hopefully it works soon. They retaped her face and i got a good picture of her chubby cheeks without any tape!! I also think she looks like she is dark blonde right now....I want it to get lighter!!

Sarah weighs 3lbs 9oz. :) They are giving her a 3 day course of Lasix to get the water off her body/lungs. No other changes as of yet. Pray that we get her off the jet and vent within the next 2 weeks...so she can start to take a bottle :). I got to hold her again today, we did really well! Her onesie actually fits!! She is also learning to perfect her stink face. lol

My child has turned into Monster Baby(see above 5day pic and 6week 4days pic)....I hadn't realized how big she had gotten until I held her today (**does a little dance**). She is a fatty!! She is getting fed 28cc's every 3 hours now, she weighs about 3lbs 60z. Her and I had a talk today about getting off the jet soon...I hope that she listened and does what momma told her to do. I get to hold her again tomorrow (**does ANOTHER little dance**). As soon as she is off the jet I can hold her way more often...

Sarah is doing really good...tough part is being here with no job, no car and no money....work is hard for Eric too....hopefully work will get busier (everyone take your car to him!!) so he can make sure everything is handled for us at home while we are gone and when we get back!!

Sarah got her isolette changed today, they do it once a week. and they put her huge boppy pillow in with her(its only the size of an adult neck pillow but big to her). She looks super cute with it! She really seems to like it too. Im gonna start dressing her every day so she can wear her preemie clothes for a while. Still holding at 3lbs 5oz. :) She is probably getting taken off the jet soon because she breathes over it (good).

Sarah is 6 weeks old today and chugging along like a little choo choo train. Eric is up this weekend and got a beautiful picture of Sarah with no tape on her face. She is still doing really well and getting chunkier every day. I get to touch her now. I bitched enough that the docs lifted the contact precautions for me. Nurses still have to gown up but I get to touch her!! Dont have much else today. :)

As of last night Sarah weighed about 3 lbs 3 ounces. She was a little puffy last night and hadn't pooped in a day or two so they gave her a glycerine chip and they gave her lasiks.....she will probably weigh less tonight. Docs are gonna talk to epidemiology and see what the deal is with me being the only person in the damn unit with contact precautions.....hope to get the ban lifted! Other than that we are doing really good so far today. I may have to update later just in case. :)

Yesterday evening Sarah was still doing well. She weighed in at 3 lbs 1.3oz.

Today Sarah is increasingly agitated. Her cultures still show light colonisation which probably means she has the Pseudomonas now and its not only in her tube. Its still not making her sick but there is a possiblilty she could be infected with it in the future. She is getting wrist wrinkles and fat knees. She is just really cute!

Hello!!

Just a quick update about yesterday! Sarah was extubated and re-intubated with a larger tube around 130pm. She did really well and has been doing really well since. She doesn't have a leak anymore in her airway. She weighs 2 lbs 14 ounces which is down from before. She was given lasix and it sloughed off a few ounces of water weight.

So far, April 15, 2009---Cultures are still negative on her trach!! Hopefully within 48 hours they will stay that way. :) Her IV was taken out and her morpine has started to be given orally. She has been more awake and alert today than she has this whole week. :) :) :)

Sarah is doing well today. She was a little puffy so they gave her lasix(a diuretic) to get some water weight off her. Her feeds are still at 26cc's every 3 hours. She weighs 3 pounds 1 ounce and she is 14.5 inches long. She kept brady'ing this morning...basically her heart rate would drop pretty low and her monitors would alarm.She is okay now, but the Respiratory Therapists think that it could be because her breathing tube leaks air. The docs are thinking about changing her breathing tube tomorrow. It's a possiblity, but not set in stone. It will be bigger to decrease the leak and hopefully once they change it they can take her off Contact Precautions. I am hoping so!! Hopefully soon she can be off the Jet and back on a conventional ventilator so I can hold her again! Hopefully after the ventilator she can get to the point where she won't need a machine to breathe for her. She has what the nurses fondly call "toaster head" where her head is flat on both sides but big in the back...lol. That's it for now

Hello Everyone!!

Today is Easter and Sarah got her picture taken! She almost fits into that dress!

Today she is 2lbs and 14.5 oz.

They upped her feeds to 26ml every 3 hours.

They keep having to move her IV! She has had one, sometimes two every day since Monday!! Poor baby is like a leaky bucket!

Pseudomonas

Sarah has something called pseudomonas colonising in her tube. She is not sick from it and the only way to get rid of it is to extubate her or change her tube. Neither of which will happen for quite a while. It is a bacteria that grows in water. The water that is in her vetilator is completely devoid of any bacteria upon entering the tube but it can grow none the less. This particular strain that she decided to get is highly resistant and for that reason the UNM Hospital Infection Control has mandated that Sarah be placed under "Contact Precautions" which basically means we can have no skin to skin contact with her. We have to wear gowns and gloves when we go in to see her. It sucks.

Sarah's Journal is here! Since there are so many people interested in Sarah's Progress I had to do something. Day to day everything that happens sometimes gets lost in my brain but hopefully I can keep this updated.

Sarah was born March 7, 2009 at 10:10pm. She weighed 1lb 7oz and was 12 1/2 inches long. She was born at 25 weeks and 3 days gestation which made her 14 weeks 4 days early.

Babies born at such an early gestation have a hard time breathing. Lung development is the last thing in babies to mature. Since Sarah was so early her breathing is done for her with a machine. She can still breathe on her own...she just needs a little help. When she was born she came out crying and breathing fine....but since breathing made her tired she sometimes 'forgot' and had to be intubated.

As of today, April 11, 2009, Sarah is 5 weeks old. She weighs 2lbs 14 ounces and is 15 inches long. That makes her twice the size she started off at. She is huge compared to the above photos.....and oh so cute! She has gained a lot more fat on her body,her skin is less red and more pink, and her motor skills are improving. She looks around and has audio and visual recognition. She cries, but she makes no sounds, her intubation tube is placed between her vocal cords. You can only see her facial expressions when she cries.

Last week Sarah had some issues. Her oxygen requirements went way up. They placed her on a different breathing machine called an oscillator and once they took a chest x-ray they put her on a high frequency jet. She had something called P.I.E.(Pulmonary Interstitial Emphysema). Basically the ventilator she was on caused the alveoli in her lungs to break and air to go into her lung tissue. On an x-ray this looks like lace. Since being on the jet, which allows for a different type of airway pressure that allows for healing, her lungs have greatly improved. Her oxygen requirements are getting lower and lower and she is doing really well. The machine is touchy and alarms all the time...but the only thing we have to worry about with that is my sanity. :)

Yay! Butt Crack!

Sarah eats 23cc's of milk every 3 hours. (7/10 of an ounce). It is fortified with additional calories to bring it to 26 calories. Regular breast milk only has 20 calories and she needs her calories to grow.
